3 Step Hideaway
Let’s get this right out there – 3 Step Hideaway is a dude ranch for motorcyclists!
Last summer, after having ridden the beautiful Valley of the Gods and the Moki Dugway in south Utah, I was on my way to the 3 Step Hideaway.
Originally having heard about it from some moto friends, the 3 Step Hideaway is one of the moto-friendly business profiles you’ll find on MotoStays. Since I was passing through the area on my way back to Seattle, it was a no brainer that I stop in and check it out. Homesteaded in the 1800’s this property is nestled in rolling hills and valleys of eastern Utah with stunning views as far as the eyes can see and the Colorado Rockies looming in the distance.
A destination in its own right, 3 Step Hideaway is conveniently located just over an hour SE of Moab between Moab and Cortez CO. Backroads with no traffic and with about a .5 mile gravel road makes getting their interesting and pleasant ride (watch out for the deer). It was like riding into a western movie, and I couldn’t help but feel like Clint Eastwood, parking my iron horse out front and dismounting. Really, it is that cool.
As luck would have it, my timing was perfect – I arrived just as a dinner of big fat grilled steaks and corn on the cob were being served up along with a warm greeting by owners Scott & Julie making me feel welcome and right at home. I washed it all down with cold, regional beers that is served on the honor system as you mark how many beers you’ve had on a check list.
As I sat down I met some other guests, distance friends from Missouri, Colorado and father and son traveling together on a special trip of their own. They were coming back to the 3 Step for a second stay after 7 days riding the back country. Their first stay being so good, they decided to come back for more.
After dinner I had a chance to tour the grounds and learn more about this unique place – smack dab in the serenity of Utah’s natural beauty far from development and noise. Scott showed me the different accommodation types includes cottages, bunk houses for groups, tee pees for the adventurous or camp sites for the rugged. This place is wonderful – from the in house dining room to the comfortable and rustic homestead house to the glamping (luxury camping). In a nutshell, there are ample options for a unique stay with ranges in prices from budget on up. While I had my tent with me, Scott upgraded me to the “Honeymoon” house and it was terrific. They have rates that cover simple camping, bunk houses or private buildings.
Uniquely, there is a full garage available for your use should your adventures get a little extra interesting or repairs are needed. Onsite collection, solar power and cooling root cellars make for a sustainable, off the grid kind of place. Speaking of off the grid, cell phones coverage is zero to limited and limited internet connections, i.e. if you need Wi-Fi this isn’t the place to get it. Not a bad thing, because it’s all about the riding, the comradery, food and friends. BTW, the breakfast is just as good as the dinner!
Don’t let the short gravel road scare you, this place is easily accessible with any motorcycle and competent rider. On a scale of 1 -5, I rate this place at a 5+ and a MUST stop for motorcyclists.
